Express Entry

Express Entry

Express Entry is an online system that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada uses to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers across the world.

Express Entry provides a pathway to permanent residence for skilled workers in Canada or overseas. For potential skilled foreign workers, Express Entry will result in fast processing times of six months or less. Express Entry manages applications for permanent residence under these federal economic immigration programs:

  • the Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • the Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • the Canadian Experience Class

Provinces and territories can also recruit candidates from Express Entry through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labour market needs.

How Express Entry Works?

Find out if you’re eligible

Step 1: Find out if you’re eligible
There are two ways to find out if you’re eligible for a program that is part of Express Entry.

Let us help you with determining your eligibility.
Find out from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website.

Get your documents ready

Step 2: Get your documents ready
You need documents, such as language test results, to show that you’re eligible for Express Entry. Some documents take a long time to get, so you should get them ready now.

Submit your profile

Step 3: Submit your profile
Your Express Entry profile is where you give Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) information about yourself. If you’re eligible, IRCC accepts you into their pool of candidates. You’ll be ranked in the Express Entry pool using a points-based system. Your score is based on the information in your profile.

Receive an invitation and apply for permanent residence

Step 4: Receive an invitation and apply for permanent residence
IRCC sends invitations to apply to the candidates with the highest scores in the pool. If IRCC invites you to apply, you’ll have 60 days to submit your application for permanent residence. IRCC will process most complete applications that have all the supporting documents in 6 months or less.

Provinces and territories = key partners

  • You may qualify for a provincial or territorial nomination as part of Express Entry.
  • Provinces and territories are able to nominate candidates who meet their regional labour market needs. Some provinces and territories search in the pool for candidates, while others require you to apply directly. Check their immigration website for your intended province of destination for more information on their requirements and to learn how to be considered for a nomination.
  • If you are nominated through a Provincial Nominee Program, you will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Remember
  • To complete an Express Entry profile, you must submit valid language test results and Educational Credential Assessments (if your education was completed outside of Canada and you want to receive Comprehensive Ranking System points towards and/or to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program).
  • Express Entry profiles are valid for one year. If you still want to come to Canada as a skilled immigrant, and are not invited to apply for permanent residence after 12 months, you can re-submit your profile and re-enter the pool (as long as you still meet the criteria).
